💥 What to do if you had a car crash in Costa Rica

After a crash it's easy to get nervous and make mistakes. These are the steps, in order, to stay safe, document everything and speed up your insurance claim.

Step by step

  1. 1
    Stop and secure the scene

Turn on hazard lights. If there are injuries, do NOT move the vehicles. If it's a minor bump with no injuries, you may pull aside to avoid blocking traffic.

  2. 2
    Help the injured: 911

If anyone is hurt, call 911 right away. Health comes before any paperwork.

  3. 3
Call the traffic police and your insurer

The traffic officer (911) files the report. Also notify your insurer (INS: 800-800-8000) to send an inspector. Don't move the cars until they arrive, unless there's danger.

  4. 4
    Take photos and details

Photos of the vehicles, damage, plates and final position. Note the other driver's name, ID, license, plate and insurer.

  5. 5
Don't admit fault on the spot

Don't negotiate or sign anything under pressure. Fault is determined by the traffic police and insurer using the report and evidence.

  6. 6
Keep the report for your claim

With the official report and photos you file the claim with your insurer. Keep everything together.
